Consumerism - [heck] yeah!

Lucky for us there is no need to amend our bad habits or make sacrifices... just buy "green"!

An Odd Day

"As Odd as it is, the day will be fine,
You see, it's the numbers 5,7, and 9.
Three odds in a row to tell you the date,
We've only three more, then a 90-year wait."

10 peso version.

Jay and I have pretty much failed at blogging these past two months. We'll try to do better in the future. To catch you up, I'll give you the 10 peso version.

We ate frozen bananas on sticks.

We burned candles.

We cancelled t.v.

We checked out the controversial/ever delayed MetroRail.

We listened to records.

We studied the basics of buying our first home.

We tried a new wine.

We discovered kale.

I went to San Antonio to visit a friend I made in Italy (who's wedding I'll be in this summer!)

We went to a kite festival.

We went kayaking on Town Lake...

...on a very windy day...

...and got front row seats to a crew race.

We watched people play on the "no swimming", a.k.a. "free swimming", side of Barton Springs.

We made friends with a swan.

We met the adorable owners of our favorite coffee shop.

We joined the crowds waiting to see the Congress bridge bats.

David and Alex came to visit.

We had an amazing weekend with our friends at Nigel and Hannah's wedding.

I got an internship at a local staffing agency doing payroll/whatever they want me to do.

We were tempted by our wedding cake.

Our cars were barely missed by a hailstorm that totaled others and prompted every car dealership to run ads announcing their "Hail Sale!"

We met Danny DeVito.

We made an offer on a house, but were beaten by a cash offer.

We missed Easter Mass because I had a fever and Jay didn't want to leave me when I felt so crummy. We settled with reading our "Christian Prayer" book.

Jay bought me "get well" flowers.

Jay turned into a dinosaur and tried to devour the ham before dinner Monday night.

A cute green lizard decided to make our balcony his home.

That brings us up to today. I've been sick all week, but am getting better. Jay is as busy as ever with work, but can "luckily" work from home in the evenings when I would rather him be home than in his office at work. We're looking forward to a funfilled weekend and will hopefully have more to post.

Have a good rest of the week!

Coffee <3

cool, clear water fall
splashing into the machine
soon I smell coffee

I often doze off at night thinking about how lovely that first cup of coffee will be in the morning.

Same as it ever was

The phrase "Same as it ever was" is heard in our house almost on a daily basis. You might recognize the lyrics from 'Once In A Lifetime' by Talking Heads.

On a cold Saturday morning, we have found ourselves sitting in Jay's office (weekend work / accounting studying) listening to this NPR story on the making of 'Once In A Lifetime'.

We recommend at least watching the music video...

Photo Blogs

There's a good chance that if you're here you like to read blogs - especially blogs with lots of photographs. I thought I'd share a link to one of my favorites.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day for us this year was a day to just be together and go wherever the day took us.

Our first stop was the downtown farmers' market. Although it was quite chilly, we thoroughly enjoyed some hot chocolate, a mushroom empanada, a migas breakfast taco, and some chocolate covered cocoa beans. The live band also added some entertainment as we wandered through the local vendors. The market as a whole was much smaller than it probably is in the summer, but needless to say, we did not leave unsatisfied.

From there we decided to seek out a large Austin postcard wall mural that Jen had seen on Flickr (a great place to search for pictures of anything and everything you can think of), armed with a camera.

After driving around, looking at the South Austin neighborhoods, we decided some tex-mex would hit the spot. Lucky for us, the famous Matt's was not too far away.

No Valentine's Day would be complete without something sweet, so we found our way to the one and only Flip Happy Crepes. (Watch them beat Bobby Flay in a throwdown here!)

After waiting in line to order, we passed the time waiting for our order to be ready with a friendly game of Uno..

..and a not so friendly game of Connect Four.

Jay may or may not have won every game. Jen has no comment.

It was all worth it.

Hope your Valentine's Day was all you had hoped for!

radio program

I heard this on the radio while driving home from work and ended up sitting in the parking lot to hear the end.

Thought for the day - wind chimes

It's the simple things in life that really make it go from good to great. I forgot how happy wind chimes make me. The sound of the wind rustling through the trees mixed with the delicate little chimes lightly clanging happily together has such a relaxing effect. Surprisingly, they bring on nostalgic feelings, as well… my grandparents’ old farm, the volunteer housing courtyard at Mission Honduras, my backyard at home in Arkansas… all different but equally memorable. Times like this really make me miss my family... We have some sleeping bags and a very nice blowup mattress. (And it even holds air again!) (hint hint)

As I sit on the back porch, sipping my Earl Grey green tea, looking at the cloudless sky, listening to my neighbor’s porch chimes chiming away, I can’t help but realize how incredibly happy I am to be right where I am. Come and join me. I have an open seat and some extra tea.

Trailer Food

Lately we have been frequenting a trailer on South Congress that sells cupcakes... oh man are they good. The Michael Jackson Whipper Snapper is our favorite so far (chocolate cupcake, cream cheese icing, shot of whipped cream injected into the center of the cake).

Next on our list to visit is Flip Happy Crepes. Anyone up for a smoked salmon w/ herbed cream cheese spinach and tomato crepe along with a whipped peanut butter w/ dark chocolate sauce, bananas and almonds crepe for desert? All of this served out of a trailer, of course! :)

We love living in Austin...
